The WI

The Women’s Institute has been running for 100 years and is still going strong. The Ogwell WI has been in existence since 1928, offering members the opportunity to meet with like-minded women over a cup of tea and take part in a range of activities.

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall in East Ogwell. Meetings are informal and offer an opportunity to hear from a wide range of speakers. We have had talks on crafts, food tasting, health and fitness, history and supporting local charities.

There is also a trading stall for books, a stall for home baking, and vegetables/plants grown by the members. We organise day trips in conjunction with the Garden Society, and support the local theatre, with outings to productions. We fund raise annually, run a tombola stall at the Christmas fayre and provide cream teas at the Ogwell Summer Fair.

We are a friendly group of women who work hard at enjoying ourselves. Why not come and try us out!

March Meeting

Thanks issued to Val, as she prepared the Village Hall for the meeting.

Flowers of the month were brought by Sally (primrose) and Eve (hyacinth).

The meeting started with the speaker, Chaz Singh, who is the former deputy mayor of Plymouth. He gave an extremely interesting account of his life in the South West since he moved down from Birmingham in 2002,
which included buying a business, getting into politics and trying to change peoples minds on issues close to his heart. Chaz also gave a demonstration in turban binding and a sari fitting on some of our audience.

During the general meeting, several issues were discussed. Thanks were issued to Sandra for holding the meeting in February.

Chaz Singh kindly offered an indoor Boules set to the Ogwell WI.

Flower of the month was chosen by Chaz’s wife Sarah, who chose Eve’s Hyacinth.
